The original name of Jamalpur city is Sinhajani. In Jamalpur district several famous religious preachers came from Yemen. One of them is Hazrat Shah Sufi Shah Jamal (RA). Although there is no mauza, village haat-bazaar named after Hazrat Shah Jamal (RA), his famous shrine is located in Sharif Jamalpur town. The district is named after him. Jamalpur became the first subdivision of Mymensingh district in 1845. The movement to form Jamalpur district was mainly organized in 1912 after the partition of Bengal. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman promised to make Jamalpur a district in 1975 when the demand to make Jamalpur a district got stronger after the independence of Bangladesh. December 26, 1978 was a happy day for Jamalpur residents. Because, on this day, Jamalpur was declared as the 20th district of independent Bangladesh.
The traditions of Jamalpur Sadar are embroidery and handicrafts, kasa art, pottery art and weaving art. In Jamalpur district, a large number of horse carts, bullock carts and buffalo carts are still found in the villages. They are generally used to transport various agricultural products.
Journey of Jamalpur Judiciary: Journey of Jamalpur Judiciary 01/12/1980 AD. Although it started with the hands of Hon'ble District Judge Mr. Mahmudul Amin Chowdhury, its tradition is very old.As a subdivision of Mymensingh district in 1845 AD, the civil and criminal justice of present Jamalpur district was being conducted from Mymensingh. Later, in 1935 AD, judicial proceedings in Jamalpur district started with the establishment of two civil courts named 'First Munsefee Court' and 'Second Munsefee Court' at a place called Ghesha Dewanpara on the banks of Bahaman Brahmaputra River in Jamalpur Sadar Upazila.Currently in Jamalpur district apart from two additional district and session judge courts, two joint district and session judge courts, one money loan court, two senior assistant judge courts and seven assistant judge courts are running in Jamalpur district. Jamalpur District's 'District Bar Association' started its journey in 1935 AD. After Jamalpur was elevated as a district, the old court building was shifted to the present Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court building in the past 1980 and the activities of District Judiciary Department started as District Judge Court, Jamalpur. Later on last 12/05/1992, when the present court building was constructed, since then the proceedings have been going on in this building. Hon'ble Justice Abdul Wahhab Mia of Appellate Division of Bangladesh Supreme Court, Hon'ble Justice Mirza Hossain Haider and Hon'ble Justice Mahmudul Hasan Talukder of High Court Division were members of the District Bar Association. Magistrate Court: In 1935, the criminal justice process started with the establishment of the Magistrate Court at a place called Ghesha Faujdari Mor on the banks of the Bahaman Brahmaputra River in Jamalpur Sadar Upazila. When the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court was created on 01/11/2007 AD through the separation of the Judiciary Department, all activities of the Magistrate Court started to be conducted from the present District Judge Court Building. Later, on 07/08/2015, the newly constructed ten-storey Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court building started the criminal proceedings of the Magistrate's Court and is still ongoing. Establishment of Special Judge Court: Special Judges Court was established in Jamalpur district on 03/04/2001 for conducting special law cases and the learned judge of this court was Mr. A.H.M. Zahurul Islam. Establishment of Nari O Sishu Nirjaton Domon Tribunal: In order to suppress the special crimes related to women and children, the trial proceedings of the Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal 1 started in Jamalpur district on 27/01/2003 AD. Mr. S.M. Helal Uddin was the first learned judge of the said tribunal. Later, when the level of special crimes related to women and children increased, the trial process of Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal 2 started on 26/04/2018. Mr. Dr. Iman Ali Sheikh was the first learned judge of the said tribunal. Establishment of Land Survey Tribunal: The trial proceedings of the Land Survey Tribunal in Jamalpur district were started on 08/07/2013 AD for the purpose of conducting trial proceedings of land survey and record correction cases. Mr. Md. Ashrafuzzaman Jilani was the first learned judge of the said tribunal. Activities of District Legal Aid Office: The District Legal Aid Office under the leadership of the District Legal Aid Officer under the National Legal Aid Act, 2000 in Jamalpur district is carrying out this noble objective of the government to provide free legal aid to the people in order to bear the burden of the cases of the poor and the poor.
